St Mark’s Basilica is one of the most iconic stops in Venice. The Byzantine style architecture and size is astounding in contrast to the surrounding canals of Venice. The four horses that sit above the main entrance were originally from Constantinople. The horses were captured and brought to Venice after the sack of Constantinople in 1204. In 1797 Napoleon stole them from Venice, but they were returned in 1815. The horses visible in this picture are replicas of the originals which are inside the Cathedral.
